Inter and intra-party dynamics have been an integral part of Maharashtra politics. The probable signs of a political churn in the state were witnessed after BJP’s Devendra Fadnavis offered to step down as the Deputy Chief Minister over his party’s poor show in the Lok Sabha elections.

“This debacle that happened in Maharashtra, our seats have been reduced, the entire responsibility for this is mine. I accept this responsibility and will try to fulfill whatever is lacking. I am not a person who will run away. I am requesting the BJP high command to relieve me from the responsibility of the government so that I can work hard for the party in upcoming elections,” Fadnavis, who leads the saffron party in Maharashtra said on Wednesday.

Reacting to his deputy’s proposition, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said all MahaYuti partners were responsible for the alliance’s poll performance and that he would reach out to Fadnavis over the issue. Shinde later dialed Fadnavis and discussed the matter. According to sources, Fadnavis and Shinde are likely to leave for Delhi on Thursday.

Shinde is likely to meet his elected MPs in the afternoon and travel with them to Delhi later, sources said.

Maharashtra is set to go to polls later this year. In Maharashtra, the ruling BJP-Shiv Sena-NCP Mahayuti won just 17 of the 48 seats, with the BJP reduced to 9 from its 2019 tally of 23 in the Lok Sabha polls.

Meanwhile, sources said the NCP leaders will also hold a meeting to reflect on the elections at 5 pm and spokesperson Umesh Patil will hold a press conference at 11 am.

BJP’s poll performance analysis

Maharashtra BJP chief Devendra Fadnavis has released a poll performance, saying, “We accept the mandate of people for Lok Sabha election in Maharashtra.” He mentioned that the MahaYuti received a 43.60% vote share with a total of 2.48 crore votes, while the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) received 43.91% vote share with a total of 2.50 crore votes. He said, “This highlights that MahaYuti fell short of only 2 lakh votes in comparison with MVA.”

The analysis mentioned the BJP received only 1.5% less votes than that in the last election.

In Mumbai, the MahaYuti received 26 lakh votes and MVA received 24 lakh votes. This means that MahaYuti got 2 lakh more votes than MVA, it added.
