‘Anurag called at 10.30 in the night’
Manoj Bajpayee in a recent interview with Humans of Bombay discussed many things related to professional life. He also opened up about how he got a film like Gangs of Wasseypur.

He said, ‘One night around 10:30, I got a call from Anurag Kashyap. I was tired by that time and was going to rest. I had not spoken to Anurag for the last many years. There were some issues between us, which were not resolved, but with one call from him, all these issues were resolved.

‘Anurag was asked to order red wine as soon as he read the script’
Manoj further said, ‘Anurag told me that he has something to show me, would I like to read it. He sent me his car. I went to his office, he read the script to me. As soon as I read the script, I asked him to order a bottle of red wine. He ordered two bottles. This is how the character of Sardar Khan was born.

Gangs of Wasseypur gave a new direction to Manoj’s career
It would not be wrong to say that Gangs of Wasseypur gave a new direction to Manoj Bajpayee’s career. The character of Sardar Khan played by him is still alive in the hearts of people. His dialogues in the film are still discussed today. This was his second film after Ram Gopal Varma’s Satya which will be remembered by people for years to come.

There was no money even for food, used to walk 5 KM- Manoj
Manoj Bajpayee also recalled his struggle days in this interview. He said, ‘I didn’t know anyone in Bombay. Nobody was going to mind my theater background. I used to travel long distances on film sets to meet directors. I didn’t even have money to eat during the lunch break. There was not enough money left to travel. He used to walk for 5 kilometers on foot.

National Award was received for Satya
In 1994, Manoj Bajpayee was given the first break by Mahesh Bhatt through his TV serial Swabhiman. 1500 rupees per episode were available for working in it. His entry in films was from Shekhar Kapur’s ‘Bandit Queen’.

Manoj considers Ram Gopal Varma’s ‘Satya’ in 1998 as his real debut and this film changed his life. He was recognized all over the country with the role of ‘Bhikhu Mhatre’. He also received the National Award for Best Supporting Actor for this role.
