Mithun Chakraborty revealed why he stopped doing art films for a while after making his debut with Mrinal Sen’s Mrigayaa. He won the National Award for his performance.
Renowned actor Mithun Chakraborty recently made headlines when it was announced that he will be honoured with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for his contribution to Indian cinema. In a recent interview, the actor revealed why he stopped working in art films after his debut in Mrigayaa. He worked in several other films before he took on another art film.
Speaking to India Today, Mithun Chakraborty spoke about why he stopped working in art films after Mrigayaa. The actor said that he noticed a change in his behaviour after he won the National Award for his role in the film. However, he realized his mistake when a producer kicked him out. He said, โAfter Mrigayaa, I got my first National Award. Jo hota hai, I started acting like Al Pacino. Aisa lag raha tha that I am the greatest actor. Mera attitude change ho gaya toh producer ne dekh ke bola โget out.โ Then I realized my mistake.โ
Chakraborty said that he decided that he would only take up another art film after he became a โstar.โ He continued, โI decided main art film tab tak nahi karunga jab tak main star na ban jaun. Isiliye from Mrigayaa to Tahader Katha so many years ka gap hai.โ In the same conversation, the actor added that he had already established himself as a โsuperstarโ when he started working on Budhhadeb Dasguptaโs Tahader Katha (1992).
Throughout his career, the actor has received three National Awards. Out of which he has received two National Awards for his role in both of these art films. Chakraborty received the National Film Award for Best Actor for essaying the role of Ghinua in Mrinal Senโs Mrigayaa in 1976. He is the only actor who has received a National Award for his debut film. He later also won the National Award once again in 1993 for his role as Shibnath in Tahader Katha.
Chakraborty became a superstar after he starred in Disco Dancer in 1982. Since then, he has worked in several Hindi and Bengali movies.
