5-time champion Mumbai Indians has lost the first match of the IPL season once. This time the team was defeated by 2022 champion Gujarat Titans by 6 runs. Mumbai is waiting to win its first match since 2012. Last time the team defeated Chennai Super Kings.

Mumbai won the toss and chose to bowl at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday night. Batting first, Gujarat scored 168 runs for 6 wickets in 20 overs. In reply, Mumbai Indians could score only 162 runs for 9 wickets in 20 overs. Sai Sudarshan was the player of the match. Sai Sudarshan played an inning of 45 runs on 39 balls and also took one wicket.

Reasons for Mumbai's defeat…

  • Bumrah was not given the first over, the captain himself brought the new ball. Mumbai's new captain Hardik Pandya did not give the first over to Jasprit Bumrah and came to bowl with the new ball himself. Pandya-Luke pair could not take wickets with the new ball. Taking advantage of this, Gujarat scored 56 runs in 7 overs. Jasprit Bumrah got the team's first wicket on the last ball of the fourth over.
  • Finishers could not play their role After Rohit-Brevis took over the innings, the team's finishers could not play their role. Tim David and Hardik Pandya returned to the pavilion after scoring 11 runs each.
  • Lost 6 wickets in last 5 overs The team lost wickets continuously in the last 5 overs. At one time the team's score was 126/3 in 15 overs and Mumbai needed 43 runs on 30 balls to win. Dewald Brevis was playing on 46 runs, but after Brevis was out, wickets started falling and the team could only score 162 runs for 9 wickets in 20 overs.

Brevis Dewald, who came after him, kept Mumbai in the run chase by making a partnership of 77 runs on 55 balls with Rohit. Even Mumbai had a strong hold in the match. Then the team's score was 107/2 in 12 overs.

After this Rohit and Brewis were out. After the dismissal of these two, the team's innings fell apart. The situation was such that the last 6 batsmen could not even add 25 runs. For Gujarat, Azmatullah Omarzai, Umesh Yadav, Spencer Johnson and Mohit Sharma took 2 wickets each. Sai Sudarshan got one wicket.

Captain Shubman Gill contributed 31 runs. Jasprit Bumrah took 3 wickets. Gerald Cooties got 2 wickets. One wicket came in the account of Piyush Chawla.
