Leader of the opposition in the lower house of the Maharashtra assembly Vijay Wadettiwar tried to corner the state government for allegedly failing to maintain law and order, having a very negative approach towards the backward classes, unemployment, and deaths in government hospitals

The Maha Vikas Aghadi, which is the alliance of opposition parties in Maharashtra, boycotted the tea party of the Eknath Shinde government on Wednesday evening ahead of the winter session of the assembly starting from December 7 in Nagpur. The leader of the opposition in the lower house of the assembly, Vijay Wadettiwar told the media: “The reason to boycott this customary tea party of the state government is its failure to resolve the issue of farmers who are still in distress and, instead of showing solidarity with them, this government is having this tea party. Hence we have decided not to be part of such a party.”

In the press conference, Wadettiwar tried to corner the state government for allegedly failing to maintain law and order, having a very negative approach towards the backward classes, unemployment, and deaths in government hospitals. “It seems that this government has failed on all fronts. Despite having all these issues in the state, this government still preferred to hold the tea party, which again shows that they are not at all sensitive towards these issues,” he said.

Based on available data from the central government, Wadettiwar told reporters that last year approximately 6,218 instances of violence were recorded in the state. This shows that after the Mahayuti government came to power, incidents of violence and crime were on the rise, he said. “The state of Maharashtra which is known as a progressive state that has the legacy of Shivaji Maharaj, Shahuji Maharaj, Jyotiba Phule, and Babasaheb Ambedkar is now on the verge of losing its old identity. If the number of crime cases is rising and more than 8,000 violence cases are getting recorded in the state in just one year then how will investments come to the state? NCRB records highlight that cases of suicides are also rising. In just one year, 22,746 suicide cases were recorded in the state. The same record also shows that Maharashtra is in third position in murder cases, 4th position in cases of rape, and 4th position in cybercrimes. Instead of addressing these issues, the state government is indulging in organising programmes like ‘government at your doorstep’ and spending a large amount on those programmes.”

Wadettiwar also targeted the government over the issue of the Maratha reservation and for “hurting the sentiments of OBCs”. Wadettiwar alleges that the stand taken by this government has not only hurt Marathas but also OBCs by proposing that all Marathas should get Kunti certificates and get reservations via the OBC route.
