Team India suffered a 227-run defeat in the Chennai Test against England. The Indian team lost 0–1 in the 4-Test series. For this match, Shahbaz Nadeem was included in India’s playing XI, ignoring Akshar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav. This was the second Test of left-arm spinner Nadeem’s career, in which he took 4 wickets.

Nadeem’s father Javed Mahmood told Bhaskar that this spinner wanted to be a pacer like former Pakistani fast bowler Wasim Akram in his childhood. However, coach Imtiaz Hussain made the spinner considering his stature.

Father wanted elder son to be a cricketer and Nadeem should study
Mahmood said, ‘I wanted to make elder son Ashhad Iqbal a cricketer. He used to play cricket well. I wanted the younger son Nadeem to study. I did not expect Nadeem to be a better player. I took both sons to Imtiaz. Nadeem, then 12, used to bowl fast with the left hand. He wanted to build like the former Pakistani fast bowler Wasim Akram. While Iqbal was an off-spinner with the batsman. After the trial, the coach advised Nadeem to leave the bowling and see spin, seeing the footsteps of Nadim.

Nadeem could not become fast bowler: coach

Coach Imtiaz told Bhaskar, ‘Seeing the height of Nadeem, I told his father that he cannot become a fast bowler. I saw her fingers. I thought that spinner could be good. Nadeem used to bowl with his left hand, so I decided to make him a left arm spinner like Bishan Singh Bedi. Both brothers worked hard.

Nadeem was a reserve player in the under-16 Bihar team for the first time: Father
The father said, ‘Elder son Iqbal has represented Bihar in under-16 and under-19. Nadeem was also very insistent for the trial of Bihar under-16 team. Then I sent both sons. I did not expect Nadeem’s selection. He was 13 then, but he was selected as a reserve player. Iqbal was made the captain of the Bihar team.

Nadeem got a chance to play a match, in which he performed better and was also selected for Bihar Under-14 team. BCCI’s talent search officer in Bengal got an eye on him while playing under-14. Nadeem was then called to Bangalore for the national camp. Nadeem then got a place in the India U-14 team and went to play in Sharjah.

Have not been able to give their best against england
The father said, ‘I saw Nadeem bowling against England. I am not satisfied with her performance. They could bowl better than this. My dream was to have my son play with the India team. He is fulfilling my dream. I want him to perform better and join the India team as a permanent bowler.

Coach refused to give training on playing with tennis ball
Coach Imtiaz said, ‘I used to go for coaching in the evening after doing the job. Both brothers were trained on Saturdays and Sundays during the day. Once I came to know that Nadeem and Iqbal have gone to play a tennis ball cricket match. Then I rebuked them and told them clearly that if they go to play tennis ball cricket, then I will not train both of them. After that both never went again. ‘
