Parliament Session Live Updates: Special 5-Day Session Begins Today, PM To Speak In Lok Sabha

A special five-day session of the parliament begins today with a discussion on the parliament’s journey of 75 years. Eight bills, including a controversial one on the appointment of Chief Election Commissioner, are listed. The sitting will shift to the new parliament building on Tuesday after a function in the central hall of the current building. A special session was also held when India completed 50 years of Independence. On 15 August 1997, a midnight session was convened.

TDP MPs Protest In Parliament Complex Against Chandrababu Naidu’s Arrest

Telugu Desam Party (TDP) MPs protesting at the Gandhi statue in the Parliament complex against the arrest of party chief and former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu in a corruption case. “Chandrababu Naidu has been arrested in an illegal manner. His arrest is illegal. We demand his immediate release. We will raise this issue in the parliament,” TDP MP Rammohan Reddy told NDTV.

Union Minister Piyush Goyal, Laxmikant Vajpayee. Sudhanshu Trivedi, Radhamohan Das Agarwal, and two other speakers are among the BJP leaders who will be speaking in the parliament during the special session that begins today. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will speak around 11:15 am in Lok Sabha.

Parliament Session LIVE: PM Modi To Speak In Lok Sabha At 11:15 am
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will speak in Lok Sabha at around 11:15 am. Both the Houses will convene today for a five-day special session that will begin with a discussion on the journey of 75 years of the Parliament. Lok Sabha Speaker and Rajya Sabha Chairman too will speak on the topic in their respective houses, besides other speakers. BJP’s senior leader Piyush Goyal is expected to speak on this in the Rajya Sabha.

LIVE: Bill To Appoint Poll Officers Dropped From Parliament Agenda After Protest

The list of eight bills given to the opposition by the government in Sunday’s all-party meeting does not feature the controversial bill for the appointment of top election officers, sources said. The meeting was held on the eve of the five-day special session of the parliament. Sources in the government said they are considering amending the bill — the Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners (Appointment, Conditions of Service and Term of Office) Bill.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address mediapersons at the Parliament complex at 10:30 am, ahead of the special session that begins today. The proceedings in both the houses will start at 11 am with a discussion on the journey of 75 years of the Parliament. From the Constituent Assembly till now – achievements, experiences, memories and lessons – everything will be discussed. Lok Sabha Speaker and Rajya Sabha Chairman will be the first speakers in their respective houses, followed by the government side. PM Modi will also speak on the topic in Lok Sabha.
