Meerut’s daughter and international player Priyanka Goswami will showcase her skills at the Paris Olympics on Thursday. Priyanka will represent India in the 20KM women’s race walk event. The event will be held in the afternoon.

Priyanka, who missed out on a medal at the last moment in Tokyo Olympics, is even more enthusiastic this time. Priyanka’s mother and father are also praying for their daughter’s victory in Madhavpuram. Father Madan Lal said that he had sold his house in Muzaffarnagar village to fulfill his daughter’s dream. She did not even have lunch so that money could be saved.
The father says that he spent his days eating langar in the gurudwara for his daughter’s medal. He worked at a mill and got shoes for his daughter, wearing which Priyanka has reached here today. Priyanka is participating in two events in the Paris Olympics, 20 km walking and marathon mixed relay walk.

Born in Muzaffarnagar, family moved to Meerut
When Priyanka returned from Tokyo, the villagers welcomed her by garlanding her.
Priyanka was born in Gadmalpur Sangri village of Fugana in Muzaffarnagar. Her father Madanpal was a bus conductor. But due to a dispute in the department, he lost his job and was suspended. Priyanka did not give up in poverty.
Priyanka, who was facing financial crisis, had to depend on Gurudwara’s langar to satisfy her hunger. Priyanka did her early education from the village’s government school. She studied in the nearby village Kurava till class 7. After this, in 2006, the family settled in Meerut.
She was tempted to see the players’ kitbags
Priyanka’s mother Anita Goswami says about her daughter’s sports journey that Priyanka used to be tempted by seeing the kitbags of players on TV. She used to say that mummy, I also want such a kitbag. Then I explained to her that this is a player’s bag, not everyone gets it. From that day onwards, she decided that she will become a player and get this bag.
Anita says that when Priyanka was in class seven-eight, she was selected for gymnastics at KD Singh Babu Stadium. Priyanka’s destination was athletics. So she left gymnastics from there and took admission in Kanohar Lal Trishala Devi College in Meerut.

To save money she skipped lunch and ate at langar
Priyanka’s father Madanpal’s eyes get wet even today when he remembers his daughter’s struggles. He says I cannot describe how much my daughter has suffered. He says Priyanka went to Patiala camp for training. While she was studying in Public College Samana, I used to send her 4 thousand rupees per month for expenses. I was not capable of giving more than this.
But, the daughter lived with that. She never complained, these four thousand rupees were nothing for the preparation of the national competition. Despite this, she saved this money. That is why she stopped having lunch in the afternoon. To satisfy her hunger, she used to go to the Gurudwara and eat langar.

Father was a conductor in roadways
Priyanka’s father Madan Pal was a conductor in UP Roadways. He came to Meerut from Muzaffarnagar in 2006. Madan Lal says that in 2010, due to the collusion of Roadways officers, false allegations were made against me and a case was registered against me and I was suspended.
After this, he drove a taxi on rent to manage the household expenses, opened a grocery store and ran a flour mill to train his daughter. To avoid problems in commuting to school and stadium, the father sold a part of the house (Gher) and bought a scooty for his daughter.

Coach gave full support After graduating from Patiala in 2014-15, Priyanka got selected in Bangalore Sai Center. After this she started getting free training. In 2018, she got a job as a clerk in the railways through sports quota. In 2011, Priyanka took admission in Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose National Institute of Sports (NIS) in Patiala. Coach Gaurav Tyagi improved Priyanka’s game at Kailash Prakash Stadium in Meerut.
Daughter demanding justice for her father
International athlete Priyanka has been demanding justice for her father from the government for 11 years. Even today Madanpal is trying for reinstatement. But, he did not get a job. In a conversation with the CM, Priyanka had demanded a job for her father.

Priyanka’s performance in Tokyo Olympics
Meerut’s daughter Priyanka Goswami missed the medal in the 20 KM women’s race walk at the Tokyo Olympics. In the 20 km race walk, Priyanka performed well for the first 6 km. She was among the top-5 athletes.
After this, Priyanka came in top-4 for some time and then in top-3. But after 10 km race walk, Priyanka started lagging behind. Priyanka took 1 hour 29 minutes 12 seconds +3.24 seconds more. She remained at 17th position.
Priyanka’s victory certificates and medals are kept in the cupboard of her house.
