Despite the record snowfall in Kashmir this year, snowfall in Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh areas has been very less.

  • Reduction of snowfall will increase pressure on glaciers in summer this year

Senior skiing National Championship is to be held in Auli, Uttarakhand this year, but a problem has arisen. There is no snow in Auli, which is covered with snow at this time every year. Due to this, the date of the championship is not being announced. However, this weather discrepancy is only a minor effect. Despite the record snowfall in Kashmir this year, snowfall in Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh areas has been very less.
Meteorologists say that rain clouds formed from western disturbances rained in Kashmir this time, but instead of raining in Himachal and Uttarakhand, they turned to Kazakhstan. Its far-reaching effect will be that in summer the temperature can bounce 2 to 3 degrees above average.
Why is this discrepancy visible
Bikram Singh, director of the Uttarakhand Meteorological Center, says that there is a disturbance from the Mediterranean Sea every third-fourth day, which forms a cloud and reaches India passing over the countries of the Middle East and Pakistan. In order to reach India, the disturbance had to be very low, but this time the disturbance is turning directly towards Central Asia due to the high altitude. Therefore, Kashmir is receiving more than average rainfall and recorded snowfall, but Uttarakhand and Himachal are much below average.
What will be the effect
Research has revealed that these conditions will remain till April. This will cause less ‘snow’ to fall in the glacier and more ‘ice’ at the bottom. Which will have far reaching serious consequences. At the same time, the average temperature of the Himalayas can be higher in summer. Due to which the glaciers will melt rapidly and the water levels will also be affected to the streams. In May and June, the maximum temperature can be three degrees above normal and the minimum temperature can be up to four degrees.
