Team India has been announced for the Test series against Sri Lanka. Rohit Sharma has been made the new captain of the team for the Test team, while senior players Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane have been dropped from the team.

4 senior players leave
Pujara and Rahane did very poorly on the South Africa tour. Apart from the Africa tour, both the experienced players have not performed much since 2020. Therefore, both were shown the way out of the team for the upcoming Sri Lanka series.

Apart from these two players, fast bowler Ishant Sharma and wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha have also been shown the way out of the Test team. Ishant has been troubled by poor form and fitness issues for some time, while Saha has been replaced by young KS Bharat.

Chief selector advised to play in domestic cricket
Announcing the team, Chief Selector Chetan Sharma said – India has officially entered the transition phase. Rahane, Pujara, Ishant and Saha are not there in the Test team. Now it’s time to back Vihari, Gill and Shreyas.

He further said- We have requested Pujara, Rahane, Saha and Ishant to play Ranji Trophy. We have told Rahane-Pujara not to consider them for two Test matches. We are not closing the doors for anyone. Score runs, take wickets and play for the country, I hope he comes back strongly.

both looking for runs
Both Pujara and Rahane have been out of form for a long time. Since January 2021, Pujara has scored only 810 runs in 16 Tests at an average of 27.11. Not even a century. At the same time, Rahane has batted at a worse average (19.95) and has scored 547 runs. He has a century in his name. On the Africa tour, Pujara scored 124 in 6 innings and Rahane scored just 136 runs. The vice-captain of the team has also been taken from Rahane.

Saha-Ishant were already out of playing XI
At the same time, Ishant Sharma and Wriddhiman were running out of playing XI before Saha. On the South Africa tour, both the players did not get a chance to play a single match in the 3-match Test series. In place of Saha, Rishabh Pant takes over the responsibility of keeping in the team. Young KS Bharat has been made part of the team in place of Saha. Bharat has been doing well in domestic cricket for a long time and can play anywhere in the batting order.

Talking about Ishant, his performance was also not special. Last year, the veteran fast bowler took 14 wickets in 8 Test matches at an average of 32.71. Apart from Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, Ishant was not even fit after the arrival of Mohammad Siraj, Shardul Thakur and Navdeep Saini in Team India.
