When Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan became President in 1962, the students wanted to celebrate his birthday. On this, he politely said- ‘It will be a matter of pride if instead of celebrating my birthday, Teachers’ Day is celebrated on 5 September.’ Since then, the tradition of Teachers’ Day took place. Dr. Radhakrishnan, who was nominated for the Nobel Prize for a total of 27 times, is the first teacher in the country to become the first Vice President and then the second President.
