The four stages of project readiness


When someone starts a project, there are a lot of resources required to be secured, as a part of preparation. These could be segregated into the hardware as well as the software components. The hardware component encompasses everything related to the availability of machinery and/or material. On the contrary, the soft part is the aggregate of knowledge plus information plus Commitment plus Conviction.

People start contemplating about a particular project only when they get introduced to the idea. This is where the information content starts building up. When the concept triggers inspiration and a subsequent desire to go further, the next step is knowledge acquisition. That’s where the role of a consultant or an advisor or that of technology partners come in. Well, everything else can be outsourced except for two vital ingredients: Commitment and Conviction.

In my long experience guiding students and coaching professionals, I have come across four different types of situations faced by professionals. Those I term as the four stages of project readiness. These are:

People are

a) High on Commitment but Low on Conviction
b) High on Conviction but Low on Commitment
c) Low on Conviction as well as Commitment
d) High on Conviction as well as Commitment

No points for guessing it right that, for the success of any project, the ideal situation is when people are high on both – Commitment as well as Conviction. This is the stage when you get what you want. Even the universe conspires to make things happen for you. Bottlenecks on the path disappear, and all your challenges meet a beneficial solution. Your decisions go right most of the times, and even when they go wrong, you can restart and rework. In this phase, passion meets performance to produce a paradise!

The third situation (as per the list above) is the most uncalled for. A person who is low on Conviction, as well as Commitment, is simply dragging himself/herself. There is no point of working on a project under such circumstances. This is not just the misuse of resources but also a gross abuse of time. Such people set wrong examples for others and even become a catalyst in spreading depression in society.

The first two categories have a different set of challenges which I shall elaborate below.

a) High on Commitment but Low on Conviction

When you are high on Commitment, you are ready to give the best effort. You are a stern taskmaster and a hard worker. Time is never a constraint for you – you can work round the clock to make things happen. However, more often than not, your project gets delayed or doesn’t meet the right milestones. All your energy gets consumed, and after some time, you become confused about the usefulness of the project itself.

All this, only because you lack Conviction. A project needs to begin only when you have unflinching faith in your abilities and also the purposefulness of the project in hand. When circumstances seem to push you back, it is your belief system which serves as a fuel for ‘survival and growth’.

So if, your homework is right and you are committed to your goals, do take a relook at your Conviction. Work on making it rock strong, and success will kiss you very soon.

a) High on Conviction but Low on Commitment

The first casualty of low Commitment is a lack of consistency. This is a typical scenario where a person usually gets into the lap of frustration.

How so ever firmly convinced you are about the surety of something to happen, nothing can by-pass “right actions”. Being low on Commitment distracts you very often. You may be the one who might jump from one project to another.

Abandoning half worked ideas may have become your habit.

Low Commitment also indicates that the “why” of your project is still unexplained. This is to say that you know ‘WHAT’ to do; however, the moment you are sure “WHY” to go for that particular project, your Commitment would automatically jack up.

Those who find themselves in this category need to work on their core purpose first. Once a strong vision is established, there will be no scope of failures ahead.
