The Supreme Court has appointed former judge of the country’s top court, Justice L. Nageswara Rao to amend the Constitution of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and create an Electoral College. Justice D.Y. Chandrachud said the former Supreme Court judge will ensure a fair and development-based approach to the future of the Olympics in the country.
The Supreme Court has directed Justice Rao to amend the constitution of the Indian Olympic Association and conduct elections by December 15, 2022. Because in the absence of elections, India can be banned from participating in the Olympics.
Along with this, the Supreme Court has allowed the current Secretary General of India Olympic Association Rajeev Mehta and Vice President Adil Sumariwala to attend the meeting with the International Olympic Committee on 27 September.
The Supreme Court bench said, “All logistic arrangements made by Justice Rao in carrying out this work will be made available by the Joint Secretary, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and the Indian Olympic Association will bear the cost.” Justice Hima Kohli was also included in this bench.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) on 8 September gave a final warning to the Indian Olympic Association to resolve its governance problems and hold elections by December. Otherwise, the International Olympic Committee can also ban India from participating in the Olympics.

The Executive Board of this committee has also decided that after the exit of Indian Olympic Association President Narinder Batra from the Indian Olympic Association, no caretaker or interim president will be recognized anymore. Secretary General Rajeev Mehta will be contacted for further talks.
Batra resigned due to personal reasons
Dr. Narinder Batra resigned from the post of Indian Olympic Association on 18 July due to personal reasons. Batra became the President of the Indian Olympic Association in the year 2017. After his resignation, elections could not be held till now. After the warning given by the International Olympic Committee on 8 September, now the acting President of the Indian Olympic Association, Anil Gupta has also resigned from the post. In such a situation, the post of President of Indian Olympic Association is now vacant. Now the Indian Olympic Association and the future of the Olympics in India are under threat. If elections for the post of President are not held by December, then India will not be able to participate in the next Olympics.
Justice Rao was also a part of Mudgal committee in IPL betting case
Justice L. Nageswara Rao was also a part of the Mudgat Committee appointed by the Supreme Court. Justice Mukul Mudgal was the chairman of this committee. Apart from Justice Rao, the committee also included former cricket umpire Nilay Dutta. This committee was ordered to independently investigate allegations like corruption, match-fixing in IPL matches held in 2013. Apart from this, Justice Rao has also been a part of many big cases.
