Amit Pandhal has been given the top seed in the 52 kg weight category in the Olympics.
The boxer’s draw for the Tokyo Olympics has been announced. Four Indian boxers, including world number-1 Amit Panghal, have been given byes in the first round. These include two male and two female boxers. Apart from Amit, Satish Kumar, Simranjit Kaur Bath and Pooja Rani got byes in the first round.
Boxers who have received a bye will start straight in the round of 16 (pre-quarterfinals). That is, they have to win two bouts to be sure of the medal. In Olympic boxing, a medal is confirmed once you reach the semi-finals.
Satish Kumar is the only Indian boxer to compete in the heavyweight category.
Nine boxers from India are participating
A total of nine boxers from India are participating in the Tokyo Olympics. This is the highest number of Indian boxers in a single Olympics. So far, India has got two medals in boxing. Vijender Singh won the bronze medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and MC Mary Kom at the 2012 London Olympics. India did not get a single medal in boxing in the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Amit Panghal will enter the ring on July 31
In men’s 52kg category, top seed Amit Panghal will enter the pre-quarterfinal bout on July 31. He will face the winner of the bout between Botswana’s Mohamed Rajab Otukile and Colombia’s Ubergen Henri Rivas Martinez. Martinez is a silver medalist of the Rio Olympics. If Panghal manages to win the pre-quarterfinals, he could face Hu Jiangguan of China in the quarter-finals. Jiangguan is a bronze medalist at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
6-time world champion MC Mary Kom has won bronze in the 2012 Olympics.
MC Mary Kom will land on July 25
In the women’s category, 6-time world champion MC Mary Kom will enter the round of 32 on July 25 in the 51 kg weight category. He will face García Miguelina Hernández of Dominican Republic. On winning this bout, third seed Colombia’s Ingrit Lorena Victoria Valencia can come in front of Mary Kom in the pre-quarterfinals. Valencia won the bronze medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
