British Army’s groundbreaking test of a laser weapon system mounted on a combat vehicle. Raytheon UK, in collaboration with Dstl and DE&S, successfully deployed the High-Energy Laser Weapon System (HELWS) on a British Army Wolfhound armoured vehicle at Dstlโs Porton Downrange. This milestone test showcased the laser weapon’s capability to neutralize targets beyond a kilometre, operated by just two personnel with minimal training time. Future trials will involve Army personnel to further assess its real-world effectiveness. Mounted on the Wolfhound, a heavy-armoured vehicle, this lightweight, portable system represents the UK’s first laser weapon integrated into a land vehicle. Developed under the MOD’s Land Laser Directed Energy Weapon Demonstrator program, HELWS aims to counter hostile drones affordably and effectively amidst evolving threats. Raytheon emphasizes HELWS’ compatibility with existing air defence systems, making it a versatile tool against NATO class 1 drones. With over 400 targets neutralized during testing, this system underscores its combat readiness for US forces and upcoming evaluations by the British Army.
