The unbelievable catfishing tale of Kirat Assi, who spent a decade in a fake relationship
UK-based Kirat Assi’s story is a shocking tale of deception that lasted nearly a decade and will captivate true crime enthusiasts. The latest Netflix documentary, Sweet Bobby: My Catfish Nightmare, chronicles her decade-long relationship with a man she believed to be a doctor named Bobby Jandu, who turned out to be her own cousin, Simran Bhogal.
The story began in 2009 when Kirat, a 43-year-old radio presenter from West London, received a Facebook message from Bobby, who was introduced to her as the brother of her cousin’s ex-boyfriend. What started as a friendly exchange evolved into an intense emotional relationship, Daily Mail reported. Over the years, Kirat and Bobby spoke almost daily, often discussing deeply personal topics.
Despite their closeness, they never met in person or even video-called each other.
As the relationship progressed, Bobby claimed to be facing numerous life-threatening situations: he was shot, placed in witness protection, and diagnosed with a brain tumor. These dramatic stories kept Kirat emotionally invested but also increasingly isolated from her friends and family. The emotional strain took a toll on Kirat’s health, leading to chest pains and stress-related leave from work.
After nearly ten years of this tumultuous relationship, Kirat hired a private investigator to uncover the truth. The shocking revelation came when she discovered who “Bobby” was and that her cousin Simran had been behind the elaborate deception all along. Simran had created multiple fake profiles and manipulated Kirat’s emotions for years.
Kirat expressed her disbelief in the documentary’s trailer, saying, “What happened to me is just one crazy story. You can’t make it up.” “She has taken 10 years of my life from me, years I will not get back,” Assi said. “In that time, I could have met someone real, had a baby. I lost my friends, my job, my savings.”
She said the betrayal was painful because it came from someone she trusted deeply. After the revelation, Kirat pursued a civil case against Simran, which was settled out of court with an apology letter explaining that the deception stemmed from a “family dispute.”
