In the second phase of the three-tier panchayat elections, voting continues in 20 districts including Lucknow-Varanasi today. In addition to district, region and gram panchayat members, 3.2 crore voters will exercise their franchise for 2,23,118 posts of Pradhan. Voting will be held till 6 pm. The fate of more than 2.33 lakh candidates will be decided today. The counting of votes will take place on 2 May.

The State Election Commission has tightened up in view of the corona infection. No mask will be allowed to enter the polling stations. 23 senior officials have been appointed as observers to organize the voting process. Infected voters are allowed to vote at the earliest wearing a PPE kit.

Muzaffarnagar, Baghpat, Gautam Budh Nagar, Bijnor, Amroha, Badaun, Etah, Mainpuri, Kannauj, Etawah, Lalitpur, Chitrakoot, Pratapgarh, Lucknow, Lakhimpur Kheri, Sultanpur, Gonda, Maharajganj, Varanasi, Azamgarh.

Total 2,33,616 enrollments

There were a total of 2,33,616 nominations for the four posts in the elections to be held in 20 districts of the state. There were 8,024 nominations for 787 posts of Zilla Panchayat members, 56,874 nominations for 19,653 posts of Area Panchayat members. At the same time, a total of 99,404 people have claimed for 14,897 posts of village head. Similarly, there were only 69,314 nominations for 1,87,781 posts of Gram Panchayat members.

Instructions to strict observers
Election Commissioner Manoj Kumar said that all the supervisors have been instructed to follow the model code of conduct in the panchayat elections. Among the supervisors appointed were Vandana Sharma, Director of Backward Classes Welfare Department, Pratapgarh, Land Revenue Council Director Digvijay Singh to Lucknow, Moradabad Development Authority Secretary Sarvesh Kumar Gupta to Lalitpur, Additional Land Arrangement Commissioner Anil Kumar Yadav to Mainpuri.

Special Secretary of the Department of Vocational Education Harikesh Chaurasia has been appointed as supervisor to Bijnor, Special Secretary of Commercial Tax Department, Sarvagya Ram Mishra to Muzaffarnagar and Varanasi Development Authority Vice President Isha Duhan in Varanasi. Apart from this, Joint Secretary of Home Guard Department, Narendra Singh has been posted as Supervisor in Azadgarh, Maharajganj, Additional Commissioner of Azamgarh Division, Anil Kumar, Additional Commissioner of Kanpur Division Rajaram in Gonda.

71% turnout in first phase

The first phase of the elections held on April 15 saw an average turnout of 71 percent. Whereas in the last panchayat election held in 2015, there was 72.11 percent polling. The Allahabad High Court has directed the state government to complete the election process by May 25.
