Tanuja was born on 23 September 1943. His father Kumarsen Samarth was a film director and mother Shobhana Samarth was a film actress. Nutan, a famous actress of her time, was her elder sister. Tanuja started her career as a child artist through the 1950 film 'Hamari Beti'. Her first film as a lead actress was 'Chhabili'. The film 'Hamari Yaad Aayegi' released in 1961 proved to be an important turning point in Tanuja's career.
