Indian players celebrate at Wankhede

Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and other players of the Indian team set Wankhede ablaze with their ecstatic dance moves.

After an overwhelming open-bus parade on overcrowded Mumbai streets, world champions Team India headed to the Wankhede Stadium for a felicitation ceremony, organized by the BCCI. More than 30,000 people have reportedly gathered at the iconic venue to welcome the Indian superstars who defeated South Africa in the T20 World Cup 2024 final to be crowned as the World Champions.

The DJ kept entertaining fans with songs of all genres as if Wankhede was hosting a rain-dance party with the stadium’s speakers blurting out Vengaboys’ party hit ‘To Brazil’ and the country’s unofficial sports anthem ‘Chak de India’.

After getting off the open bus the Indian squad stepped into the ground and couldn’t hold themselves from grooving to the music. Every member of the victorious World Cup squad was dancing at Wankhede and left the crowd in a frenzy.

An ocean of humanity greeted the victory parade of the T20 World Cup-winning Indian team in South Mumbai’s Marine Drive as thousands of passionate fans gathered to catch a glimpse of their favourite stars, bringing the traffic to a complete standstill.

The two-hour open bus parade, which was delayed by two hours, started at Nariman Point at 7:30 pm and went to the Wankhede Stadium. The distance is covered usually in five minutes but it took more than an hour as the players savoured the evening of their lives all drenched — not in rain but unadulterated love from their die-hard fans.

The team had earlier landed in Delhi amid much fanfare before heading to the Prime Minister’s residence for breakfast, where they spent close to two hours. The Prime Minister’s Office shared a little over a minute-long video in which the players were seen engaging in a chat, sitting in a circle around Modi.

For the interaction, players wore customised jerseys with the word ‘CHAMPIONS’ inscribed in bold letters on the front.
