The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday predicted heavy rainfall over Assam, Meghalaya, and Tamil Nadu for the next three days. Here are the key updates:

  • Heavy rainfall is very likely over Assam and Meghalaya on October 7, the IMD said.
  • Isolated heavy rains with thunderstorms and lightning is likely to occur over Andaman and Nicobar Islands on October 7 and 8.
  • Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Kerala are also very likely to receive heavy downpour accompanied by thunderstorm and lightning on October 8 and 9.
  • The Sikkim Education Department on Friday notified that all government and private schools, colleges and universities in the state will remain closed till October 15 due to the prevalence of extreme weather conditions.
  • As per rescue team officials, 14 bodies have been found so far while 102 people, including 22 Army personnel, remained missing after a cloudburst over Lhonak Lake in North Sikkim in the early hours of Wednesday triggered a flash flood in the Teesta river basin.
  • Meanwhile, incessant rainfall over the last couple of days has led to massive water logging across Assam’s Guwahati and almost all parts of the city reported flooding. The situation worsened since the early hours of Wednesday as the water entered houses and even rose to above the waist-level in many areas.
  • The weather department has also said that conditions are favorable for further withdrawal of southwest monsoon from remaining parts of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, some parts of Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, and some more parts of Maharashtra and central Arabian sea during the upcoming two-three days.
  • Heavy rains lashed several parts of Tamil Nadu including Kanchipuram and the capital city of Chennai on Friday. Due to the heavy rains, many areas witnessed waterlogging which created problems for the commuters.
  • The IMD said in its statement that no significant weather has been predicted over the region of northwest, central and west India during the next five days.
