India will hope to end their 25-year-long medal draught in Asian Games weightlifting this year in Hangzhou. The weightlifting events at the 19th Asiad will take place from September 30 to October 7. The Xiaoshan Sports Centre Gymnasium will host the events. Olympic silver medalist Saikhom Mirabai Chanu and 24-year-old Bindyarani Devi Sorokhaibam will carry the Indian hopes at the Hangzhou Games. Despite enjoying tremendous success in the global circuit, Mirabai Chanu has yet to showcase his dominance in the continental meet.
To make her Asian Games debut on a promising note, Mirabai pulled out her name from the World Weightlifting Championships 2023 as she wanted to remain fit. The 29-year-old from Manipur will compete in the 49kg category at the Hangzhou Games. Mirabai Chanu claimed gold in the same category at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games last year. Meanwhile, Bindyarani Devi finished second in the 55kg category at the 2022 Commonwealth Games. She will represent India in the same event in Hangzhou.
Weightlifting has been part of the Asian Games roster in every edition except for the 1962 Games. India has so far won a total of 14 medals in the Asiad weightlifting but none of them was gold. Karnam Malleshwari was the last Indian lifter to secure a podium finish in 1998. She claimed a silver medal in women’s middleweight.
