Many rules of short format of cricket i.e. ODI and T20 favor the batters to a great extent. In such a situation, the bowler has to do something different to get the wicket. The yorker ball is often used to prevent the batsmen from playing big shots and get them out. Now new version of yorker wide yorker Being used a lot. Bowlers are using it continuously in IPL.
What is a wide yorker?
The length of a wide yorker is similar to that of a traditional yorker, but the line sets the two apart. This New Yorker is bowled somewhere between the wide mark and the off stump. The simple idea of a wide yorker is to give the batter fewer chances to slog. The batsman usually slogs in the leg side. If the wide yorker is accurate, then it is not possible. Wide yorkers can be shot in the off side. To avoid this, fielders are usually kept at any three of the four important boundary positions of third man, deep point, deep extra cover and long off. A wide yorker often backfires against a batsman who plays well inside out shots or has the ability to fine slice the ball.
Based on the field placement, the batsman sometimes guesses that a wide yorker is about to come. To deal with this, he moves outside the off-stump before the delivery of the ball. For example, we saw that Rahul Tewatia followed the same method and hit a six off the last ball against Punjab Kings bowler Odeon Smith and helped Gujarat Titans win.
The area where the wide yorker is bowled can be from the 5th to the 7th stump line. Whereas a traditional yorker is thrown at the batsman’s shoes. By the time he removes his leg or brings the bat down, the ball hits the wickets. Many batsmen have also been injured in such a situation, because they could not move their feet at the right time. Such a dangerous yorker is called a ‘toe crushing yorker’ in the cricket world. If not bowled then it is certain to get LBW in this situation.
The batsman stands deep in the crease to tackle the normal yorker so that the yorker hits him at the half-volley. Standing deep in the crease also works for wide yorkers.
Lasith Malinga and Jasprit Bumrah are included in the 2 yorker specialists of modern day cricket.
Lasith Malinga, Mitchell Starc, Jasprit Bumrah, Lockie Ferguson, Trent Boult and Shaheen Afridi have been some of the bowlers in recent times who can bowl wide yorkers with yorkers. With the advent of new technology, the edges and sweet spots of the bat have become better than before. Now the batsmen feel free to leave the stumps and try to hit the ball between the stumps by giving themselves room. If the ball hits the bat properly, then the chances of scoring increases. Since the feet are not in line with the ball during this time, the batter can easily block the ball with the bat.
The use of wide yorker is increasing continuously in IPL
In IPL 2019, right handed fast bowlers bowled 64 wide yorkers to right handed batsmen. In 2020, this number rose to 118, registering a growth of 84% during this period. Interestingly, in the 2019 edition, the bowlers bowled 28 yorker deliveries to the batsmen of the opposite style. That is, when right-arm fast bowlers bowl to left-handed batsmen, and left-arm fast bowlers bowling to right-handed batsmen. In 2020, the number of such wide yorkers increased to 95. 239% increase. Indeed, in the era of the helicopter shot, the wide yorker becomes a powerful weapon against the master hitter batsmen of the traditional yorker.
MS Dhoni was in excellent form during the ODI series played on India’s tour of New Zealand in 2009. Then Kyle Mills caught him in the net of the wide yorker. Mills is now the bowling coach of Kolkata Knight Riders and he is training Andre Russell for such bowling.
Wide yorker has also silenced Rishabh Pant’s bat
The wide yorker allows the captain to set one-sided field. In IPL 14, left-handed hitters Rishabh Pant and Shimron Hetmyer were in good form against RCB. Bowler Kyle Jamieson takes a wide longoff at third man, point, deep cover, extra cover to stop him from playing the big shots. Long on to the leg side, short fine leg to deep midwicket and then backward square leg to the inside of the circle. In such a situation, if the batsman wants to play a scoop shot from the top of short fine leg, then the batter has to beat the line as well as the angle. The bowler’s strategy was perfect.
Rishabh Pant fell while trying to play a shot on a wide yorker against Bengaluru.
How does the skill of the wide yorker come?
Like the traditional yorker, the bowler practices for hours to learn the wide yorker. During this, he prepares to throw wide yorkers and slow yorkers in any situation of the match while sweating in the net. Many stories have come out in which it has been seen that bowlers practice by placing a shoe in front of the stumps and a little before the wide line to perfect the yorker. Bowlers like Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis were adept at inswing yorkers and reverse swing yorkers.
In modern day cricket, it is considered best to mold yourself according to the circumstances. The edge of this game is constantly tilting in favor of the batsmen. In such a situation, if the bowlers do not want to score more runs, then they will have to bring variation in their balls. Modern bowlers are working on wide yorkers and slow yorkers along with the traditional yorkers.
Runs are scored very fast in T20 cricket and to prevent this, bowlers are using wide yorkers more than in the rest of the format of cricket. The bowlers should have maximum variety in the shortest format of the game. If you want to become a successful bowler in the T20 format, then you should know how to do the wide yorker better.
In IPL 15, Rajasthan won matches on the basis of wide yorker
Rajasthan Royals has been the only team this season which has won 5 matches after losing the toss and batting first in 6 matches. The credit of his success is being given to the maximum number of bowlers. Let us tell you about two such occasions when the bowlers of Rajasthan won the team by defending the target by putting a wide yorker in the 20th over.
In the match played between Rajasthan Royals and Lucknow Super Giants in IPL 15, a batsman like Marcus Stoinis was on strike. In the last over, Lucknow had to score 15 runs to win. Everyone felt that the Lucknow Kangaroo would reach the target easily with the batsmen. In such a situation, Rajasthan captain Sanju Samson caught the ball in the hands of Kuldeep Sen, who was making his IPL debut.
Surprisingly, Kuldeep won the match by 3 runs. After the match, in the post match presentation ceremony, Sanju told that he had seen Kuldeep practicing wide yorker in the nets. Sanju thought then that Kuldeep can be bowled in a pressure situation. Despite batting brilliantly against Rajasthan, Stoinis looked helpless in front of the wide yorker and could not win the match for the team.
The 9th match of IPL 15 was between Rajasthan Royals and Mumbai Indians. MI got a target of 194 to win at the DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai. Mumbai had to score 29 runs in the last over to win while Kieron Pollard, who had scored 11,523 runs in T20 cricket, was on strike. Captain Sanju Samson this time bowled the ball in the hands of Navdeep Saini. Saini bowled a wide yorker all the balls. In this over, only 4 runs could be scored with the bat and 4 balls were dot. Even Pollard got out trying to hit the last ball. If even a batsman like Pollard is not able to play any ball, then you can understand how much its importance is going to increase in the coming times.
