The upsets in the T20 World Cup have spoiled the equation of the 4 big teams. The problems of 2009 champion Pakistan have increased after losing to America and 2021 runner-up New Zealand have increased after losing to Afghanistan. Defending champion England could not get its first win even after 2 matches. At the same time, 2014 champion Sri Lankan team is close to being eliminated from the group stage after losing 2 consecutive matches.

While preparing the schedule of the tournament, ICC had kept in mind that there should be 2 strong and 3 weak teams in each group. So that only 2 top teams from each of the four groups reach the Super-8 stage and the next stage is challenging, but the defeat of the strong teams has spoiled the plans of ICC. Let us know how the situation of Pakistan, Sri Lanka, England and New Zealand is at this time…

If Pakistan loses today then the next stage is almost impossible
Pakistan lost to America in its first group match. With this defeat, the team reached fourth place in the points table of Group-A. Today it will face India, if the team loses here then Pakistan’s chances of reaching Super-8 will be reduced due to two consecutive defeats.

After Pakistan’s defeat today, if India defeats Canada and America defeats Ireland, then both the teams will have 6-6 points. In such a situation, 2 teams from India and America will qualify from Group-A. At the same time, the journey of 2022 runner-up team Pakistan will end in the group stage itself.

Group-A equation: India and America have more chances to qualify
In Group A, America is currently at the top of the points table after winning 2 matches. India is at the second position after winning one match and getting 2 points.

  • America has 2 matches against India and Ireland. America has less chances of winning against India, but the team can reach 6 points by defeating Ireland.
  • India has 3 matches against Pakistan, America and Canada. India has a high chance of winning in all three matches. This can help the team reach 8 points.
  • If America upsets India then America can have 8 points and India can have 6 points. In this condition also Pakistan will be out of the group stage.
  • If Pakistan now wants to make it to the Super-8 stage, it will have to defeat India. Along with this, it will also have to win the last two matches.

Can Pakistan qualify even after losing to India?
Yes, after losing to India, if Pakistan defeats Ireland and Canada, then the team will have 4 points. After this, it will have to pray that America loses both the matches. America has 2 matches against India and Ireland. Both the teams are better than America in the ICC rankings and are also contenders to defeat America. If America loses both the matches, then both it and Pakistan will have 4-4 points. In such a situation, Pakistan will have to keep a better run rate than America to qualify.

Sri Lanka’s problems increased after losing to Bangladesh
In Group D, the 2014 champion Sri Lanka has suffered two consecutive defeats and the team is at number five in the points table. Sri Lanka was defeated by South Africa in the first match and Bangladesh in the second match. Due to this, it seems difficult for Sri Lanka to reach the Super-8.

Sri Lanka has 2 matches against Nepal and Netherlands, even if they win both the matches, the team will have only 4 points. Whereas South Africa and Bangladesh teams can reach Super-8 by getting 6-6 points each.

Group-D equation: South Africa has a higher chance of qualifying
The chances of South Africa and Bangladesh reaching the next round from Group D have increased. The African team has 4 points from 2 wins and is at the top of the points table. Bangladesh is at the second position with 2 points.

  • South Africa has 2 matches remaining against Bangladesh and Nepal. By winning both the matches, the team will be at number one with 8 points and will qualify.
  • Bangladesh has 3 matches remaining against South Africa, Nepal and Netherlands. If Bangladesh wins even 2 matches, the team can qualify with 6 points.
  • Netherlands can also qualify from Group D. The team has 2 points after 2 matches. If it wins both the last matches against Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, then the team will qualify with 6 points. However, the chances of this are very less.

Afghanistan increased New Zealand’s problems
2021 runner-up New Zealand was defeated by Afghanistan by 84 runs in the very first match, due to which the team is at the last position in the points table. Now it has to play its next match against the home team West Indies. If the Kiwi team loses to West Indies as well, then the situation of the team will become like that of Sri Lanka.

In Group C, if Afghanistan defeats Papua New Guinea and West Indies defeats Uganda, then both teams will have 6-6 points. This will ensure that Afghanistan and West Indies qualify and New Zealand’s journey will end.

Group-C equation: Afghanistan can qualify
Afghanistan is at the top of Group C with 4 points after winning 2 matches. West Indies is at the second position with 2 points.

  • Afghanistan has 2 matches against Papua New Guinea and West Indies. If the team wins both the matches, it will qualify with 8 points. On the other hand, if it wins even one match, the team will get 6 points.
  • West Indies has 3 matches remaining against Uganda, New Zealand and Afghanistan. If the team wins all three matches, it will qualify with 8 points. If it wins 2 matches, the team will have 6 points. On the other hand, if both New Zealand and Afghanistan defeat the home team, then West Indies can also be eliminated from the group stage itself.
  • The match between West Indies and New Zealand will be a do or die situation for both the teams because if they lose here then their chances of qualifying even after winning against weaker teams will diminish.

England may also be out
Defending champions England also have chances of being eliminated from the group stage. England’s first match against Scotland was inconclusive due to rain. The team lost against Australia in Barbados. Due to this, England has only one point from 2 matches and the team has reached fourth place in the points table without a win.

England now has 2 matches left against Namibia and Oman. Even if they win both the matches, the team will have only 5 points. If Scotland defeats Oman, it will also have 5 points. In this condition, the team with better run rate will qualify.

Group-B equation: Australia has a higher chance of qualifying
Australia is at the top of Group B with 4 points after winning 2 matches. Scotland is at the second position with 3 points from 2 matches.

  • Australia has 2 matches remaining against Namibia and Scotland. Australia has a high chance of winning both. This will help the team qualify with 8 points.
  • Scotland has 2 matches remaining against Australia and Oman. If they win even one match, the team will have 5 points. If the team defeats Australia, it will confirm qualification with 7 points. However, the chances of winning against Australia are less.
  • England will be able to qualify with 5 points only if Scotland loses both of its remaining matches or if Scotland’s run rate remains lower than England even after winning one match. Currently, Scotland’s run rate is much better than England.
