The Ukrainian Defense Ministry confirmed on Nov 5 that its troops had engaged North Korean units deployed to assist Russia. In an interview with South Korean TV, Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov confirmed a “small engagement” with North Korean troops. A Kyiv official said Ukrainian troops fired artillery at North Korean soldiers in Russia’s Kursk region, where Ukraine has been staging a three-month-old incursion. Andrii Kovalenko, head of Ukraine’s Security Council counter-disinformation, said North Korean troops in Kursk have been shelled, without details. In his nightly address, Ukrainian President Zelensky said Pyongyang’s deployment of troops marked “a new page in instability in the world.”
