The Law Faculty of Delhi University is preparing to include the ancient Sanskrit text Manusmriti in the Judiciary (Legal Method) paper in its graduation programme, regarding which some faculty members of the university have expressed concern.

The proposal for inclusion in the syllabus for the upcoming academic year will be presented before the Academic Council of DU on Friday, July 12. Manusmriti Manubhashya written by G.N. Jha will be suggested to be included in the graduation syllabus under Unit-5 of Bachelor of Law or LLB.

Suggestions to include in NEP 2020

Professor Anju Wali Tiku, Dean of Law Faculty, said, ‘Manusmriti has been proposed to be included in NEP 2020. This includes the idea of ​​​​incorporating the thinking of India. The unit in which it has been included is an analytical unit, it strengthens the analysis. This will be a better step to understand.

On the other hand, the Social Democratic Teachers Front wrote a letter to DU Vice Chancellor Yogesh Singh on July 10, saying that it has come to my knowledge that Manusmriti has been suggested to students as an optional reading, which should not happen. This will be a bad decision for women and backward classes.

Social Democratic Teachers Front wrote in the letter – Education is very important for the progress of women and there are many chapters in Manusmriti which are against the rights of women. Including any part of Manusmriti would be against the Constitution.

The Law Faculty is preparing to add three new syllabus on the new criminal law that came into effect from July 1. The Indian Penal Code 1860 has been replaced by the Code of Criminal Procedure (CRPC) and the Evidence Act.
