The Central Government on Tuesday, July 30, appointed Preeti Sudan as the Chairman of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). Preeti Sudan, a 1983 batch IAS officer, is the former Union Health Secretary. She will take charge on August 1.
37 years of experience in many departments including Defense Ministry
Andhra Pradesh cadre officer Sudan has also served as Secretary of Women and Child Development, Ministry of Defence and Department of Public Distribution. She is known for her important contribution in the major Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao and Ayushman Bharat missions. Apart from this, she also gets the credit for making laws on National Medical Commission, Allied Health Professional Commission and ban on e-cigarettes.
She has also served as a member of the WHO Independent Panel for the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control. Apart from this, Sudan has worked as a consultant with the World Bank. She holds an MPhil in Economics and an MSc in Social Policy and Planning from the London School of Economics (LSE).
Preeti Sudan has 37 years of experience working in various government departments.
Manoj Soni resigned amidst the Pooja Khedkar controversy
Preeti Sudan’s appointment comes at a time when UPSC is facing controversy over Pooja Khedkar. Sudan’s promotion comes after the sudden resignation of UPSC Chairman Mahesh Soni. Soni recently resigned citing personal reasons. He has said that after his resignation, he will focus on social and religious work.
Rajya Sabha MP said- was removed from the post amid controversies
After the resignation was reported, Manoj Soni had said that his resignation is not in any way connected to the controversies and allegations of trainee IAS Pooja Khedkar. At the same time, Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Jairam Ramesh has said on the resignation of the chairman that he was removed from the post amid controversies related to UPSC.
Manoj Soni was sworn in as the Chairman of UPSC on 16 May 2023.
Every year UPSC conducts exam for recruitment in civil services
UPSC is a constitutional body under Articles 315-323 Part XIV Chapter II of the Constitution of India. This commission conducts various examinations on behalf of the central government. It conducts civil services examinations every year for recruitment to IAS, Indian Foreign Service (IFS), Indian Police Service (IPS) and Central Services- Group A and Group B.
UPSC is headed by a chairman. It can have a maximum of 10 members. Even after the appointment of Sudan, there is a vacancy of four members in the commission. The tenure of each member of the commission is for six years or till the age of 65 years.
