Matthew Perry’s mom recalls her last conversation with him before his death, revealing he had a premonition and wasn’t scared.
Matthew Perry’s mother, Suzanne Morrison, believes her son had an intuition about his own death. In an emotional interview with Today, airing on Monday (October 28), the one-year anniversary of the beloved Friends star’s death, Suzanne opened up about the final conversation she had with her son before his tragic passing. Speaking alongside her husband and Perry’s stepfather, Keith Morrison, Suzanne recounted the tender moments leading up to her son’s unexpected death.
Matthew Perry passed away last year at the age of 54, after being found unconscious in the hot tub of his Los Angeles home. The cause of death was later ruled as “acute effects of ketamine.” In a preview clip from the interview, shared on NBC Morning News Friday, Suzanne described how Perry seemed to have an eerie sense of what was to come.
Recalling the poignant last moments with her son, Suzanne said, “He went through a period, interestingly enough, just before he died when he was showing me one of his new houses.” She went on to share how, during that visit, Perry expressed his love and happiness in a way that felt unusual. “He came up to me and said, ‘I love you so much, and I’m so happy to be with you now.’” She added, “It was almost as though it was a premonition or something. I didn’t think about it at the time, but later I realised how rare that kind of conversation was for us.”
The emotional exchange left Suzanne reflecting on her son’s state of mind. She admitted feeling a sense of foreboding after he told her, “I’m not frightened anymore.” This comment, she said, worried her. “There was an inevitability to what was going to happen next to him, and he felt it very strongly,” she shared in the interview.
Matthew Perry’s passing shocked fans and friends around the world. The actor, best known for his role as Chandler Bing in Friends, had a complex history with addiction, which he often spoke about candidly in interviews and his memoir. Suzanne had Perry with her ex-husband, John Bennett, and after their split, she married Dateline correspondent Keith Morrison. Together, they raised Perry along with their four children. Perry’s father, John, also remarried and had another child.
