Gautam Gambhir feels Rohit Sharma played a poor shot against England to get out against England in the ODI World Cup match on Sunday in Lucknow. Rohit missed out on his century and was dismissed on 87 by spinner Adil Rashid. It was a captain’s knock from Rohit as he rescued India from a tricky position and helped them post 229/9 in 50 overs.

The swashbuckling opener played sensibly and stitched a crucial 91-run partnership with KL Rahul for the fourth wicket which helped India recover from early wickets as they are three down for just 40.

It was the 37th over of the innings when Rohit looked to dispatch the ball over deep mid-wicket for a maximum but failed to time it well and caught by Liam Livingstone who held onto the catch despite his right knee getting stuck into the ground.

Gambhir was not impressed with Rohit’s shot selection which got him out and said India needed him at that stage of the game.

“It was a bad shot as well. At that time obviously, India wanted him to bat a little bit deeper. At times you live by the sword, you die by one. That is how he has been playing in this World Cup. He has been taking his chances but he batted beautifully. And I’m sure he would be disappointed as well because he could have,” Gambhir said on Star Sports.

The veteran opener further elaborated that Rohit had a chance to stitch a big partnership with Suryakumar Yadav to take India close to 270.

“See, a hundred is not important. More important is that if he takes India 260 to 270 which would have been a very good total on this wicket and that’s the reason why I said he played a very bad shot because he was playing with Surya and they were having a very good partnership,” Gambhir added.

David Willey was the pick of the bowlers for England with (3/45). While Chris Woakes (2/33) impressed in his seven-over spell with the new ball while leggie Adil Rashid (2/35) continued to collect wickets in the middle overs.
