Identified as Sunwear, the millionaire claimed to have removed five million renminbi (Rs 5.69 crore ) from his savings after experiencing worse customer service.

This Chinese millionaire isn’t to be messed around with. A story of his old incident circulating on the web suggests the rich man, after having a clash with a Shanghai bank’s security personnel, withdrew wads of cash and made the staff count it manually. Identified as Sunwear, the event is said to have occurred in 2021, which the man detailed in a Weibo post online. According to Insider, the millionaire claimed to have removed five million renminbi (Rs 5.69 crore) from his savings. Sunwear admits the move came after experiencing worse customer service from security guards who showed him a “terrible” attitude.

He quickly made an inquiry about his maximum sum of withdrawal and went on to instruct the staff to count the wads of cash by hand. Notably, it took a couple of employees more than two hours to complete the task. The online post also revealed his plans to withdraw the rest of his money to transfer to another bank.

But there’s a plot twist:

It appears the security guard didn’t misbehave instead the clash arose when the millionaire was asked to abide by the COVID-19 protocols. The bank in question reportedly made an official statement in the matter revealing Sunwear approached the branch without wearing a mask. Apparently, the security personnel only asked him to put one on.

In a subsequent Weibo post, the Chinese millionaire defended himself admitting he had forgotten to bring his mask but did ask the guards for a spare one. Sunwear maintained there wasn’t a single moment wherein he refused to comply with the pandemic norms claiming he also asked the security personnel for a store nearby where he could purchase a new mask.

At the time pictures of his suitcases filled with cash went viral across social media platforms. One user on X shared his story writing, “This week in Shanghai, China, a millionaire named ‘Sunwear’ withdrew his entire savings of 5 million yuan and ordered the bank staff to count every single note. All because they asked him to wear a face mask. He then put the money in suitcases and left.”

The incident was met with divided responses from online users. While some found the story amusing, a few highlighted how it was much easier to put on a face mask than to mistreat employees who reminded him about following rules. Then there were those who deemed the story to be a fake, theorising no bank ever allows customers to withdraw such a lump sum amount without fulfilling a plethora of formalities.
