Central Government seeks suggestions for draft of Indian Stamp Bill, 2023: The Government of India has sought suggestions from the public on the draft of the Indian Stamp Bill, 2023 within 30 days. In fact, the Government of India prepared the draft of 'Indian Stamp Bill, 2023' to keep pace with the modern stamp duty system.

  • After becoming law, this bill (draft) will replace the Indian Stamp Act, 1899.
  • The Indian Stamp Act, 1899 (2 of 1899) is a fiscal law which provides for the imposition of a stamp duty on documents recording transactions.
  • Stamp duty is levied by the Central Government, but collected and appropriated by the respective States as per the provisions of Article 268 of the Constitution.
  • The Indian Stamp Act, 1899, is a pre-constitutional Act. It has been amended from time to time to enable the modern stamp duty regime.
  • However, many of the provisions contained in the Indian Stamp Act, 1899 have become redundant/inoperative and hence, there is a need to redraft the Indian Stamp Act, 1899.
  • It is therefore proposed that the Indian Stamp Act, 1899 be repealed and a new law made to meet the present realities and objectives.

4. Tripuri Language, Kokborok Day 2024 : Every year on 19 January, Tripura celebrates 'Kokborok Day' to promote the Kokborok language. It is also called Tripuri Language Day. This is an important cultural program of the state.

  • This year marks the 46th anniversary of Kokborok Day, celebrated annually to demand the restoration of the ancient language of Tripura that has been spoken among the Tripuri community for thousands of years.

  • According to the 2001 census, the number of Kokborok speakers was approximately 695,000.
