Glenn Phillips’ stunning catch (X)

Glenn Phillips took an ‘absolute screamer’ to send back Marnus Labuschagne.

Glenn Phillips turned into a superhuman on Day 2 of the ongoing second Test between New Zealand and Australia at the Hagley Oval in Christchurch. Phillips, arguably one of the most prolific fielders in recent times, pulled off a full-stretch dive to take an “absolute screamer” that put an end to the gritty innings of Marnus Labuschagne. The event transpired in the 61st over of Australia’s first innings when Labuschagne required only ten runs to complete his century. Tim Southee bowled a length delivery pitching way outside of the off-stump. Labuschagne could have left the ball but attempted to clear the boundary through the gap between gully and point.

The Aussie batter managed to find a good connection and the ball looked way out of the reach of Glenn Phillips, who was placed at gully. The New Zealand all-rounder, however, reacted promptly and threw his body in the air, extending his right arm. As soon as the ball glued to his clasp, the home crowd at Christchurch went into a frenzy as they got to witness one of the best catches of all time.

Glenn Phillips immediately burst into a roaring celebration while Labuschagne was left in disbelief. The Australian walked off the ground while nodding his head in utter disappointment. A clip of Phillip’s unreal effort was dropped on the official X account of TVNZ+, the official broadcaster of the ongoing Test series. The caption of the post read, “SUPERMAN! What a catch from Glenn Phillips!”

After the video surfaced on the internet, many cricket enthusiasts came forward to appreciate Glenn Phillips. One of them was quick to come up with a new name for the New Zealand fielder– “Flying Phillips.”

Another fan feels the “word ‘screamer’ was invented for this very catch.”

Calling Glenn Phillips the “Superman”, an individual commented, “Time and again he is pulling some crazy catches.”
