Rohit Sharma has captained India in 54 T-20 matches.

BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) Secretary Jay Shah has announced that Rohit Sharma will be the captain of India in the T20 World Cup in June.

Jay Shah said at the event held in Rajkot, we may have lost the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup, but we won hearts by winning 10 consecutive matches there. I am confident that India will win the 2024 T20 World Cup in Barbados under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma.

On Wednesday, the name of the SCA Stadium was changed to Niranjan Shah Stadium. In the same event, Shah announced Rohit's captaincy. Rohit, head coach Rahul Dravid and men's national team chief selector Ajit Agarkar were also present in the programme.

There was doubt about Rohit playing the World Cup after leaving the captaincy from IPL.
Mumbai Indians had snatched the captaincy from Rohit in IPL and given it to Hardik Pandya. Since then there was doubt about Rohit playing T20 and captaining the Indian team. MI management had traded Hardik to Gujarat for Rs 15 crore even before the auction of 2024 season. MI had given Rs 15 crore to Gujarat for this and also gave a separate amount. Even before the auction, the management had decided to make Hardik the captain.

Hardik was captaining since T-20 World Cup 2022
Since India's semi-final exit from the T20 World Cup in November 2022, Hardik Pandya has led India in most of the T20 Internationals. When Rohit was recalled for the home T20 series against Afghanistan in January, the hopes of him and Virat Kohli playing in the 2024 World Cup increased.

Pandya is currently rehabbing due to his ankle injury. He was injured against Bangladesh in the World Cup last year. He is expected to be fit before the IPL, where he will replace Rohit to lead Mumbai Indians as captain.
